Work out your balloon count
| Size | Balloons | Per color | Bags |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 inch | 54 | 18 | 3 bags of 100 |
| 11 inch | 82 | 28 | 3 bags of 100 |
| 18 inch | 19 | 7 | 3 bags of 25 |
Bags are counted per color, because you buy each color separately. Planning estimate only: confirm measurements and your supplier's pack sizes before you order.
Every balloon job starts with the same question: how many do I actually need? Order too few and you are driving to the supplier the night before. Order too many and the extra bags eat the margin on a job you priced tightly. This free balloon garland calculator gives you a fast, realistic starting count by size and by color, plus the number of bags to buy.
How the calculator works
An organic garland is sold by the foot, so the calculator starts there. It multiplies your length by a balloons-per-foot figure for the density you pick, splits that total across the three sizes most organic garlands use, adds your spares, and then divides by color.
| Density | Balloons per foot | 10 ft garland, 10% spares |
|---|---|---|
| Light | 10 | 112 |
| Standard | 14 | 155 |
| Full | 18 | 199 |
- Light suits airy, gappy garlands where the backdrop shows through, and garlands that are mostly 11 inch.
- Standard is a normal organic garland with clusters of 5 inch tucked into the gaps.
- Full is a thick, fluffy garland with deep layering and very little showing through.
Balloon garland size chart
Standard density, 10 percent spares, sizes split 35 percent 5 inch, 53 percent 11 inch and 12 percent 18 inch.
| Length | 5 inch | 11 inch | 18 inch | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 ft | 22 | 33 | 8 | 63 |
| 6 ft | 33 | 49 | 12 | 94 |
| 8 ft | 44 | 66 | 15 | 125 |
| 10 ft | 54 | 82 | 19 | 155 |
| 12 ft | 65 | 98 | 23 | 186 |
| 15 ft | 81 | 123 | 28 | 232 |
| 20 ft | 108 | 164 | 37 | 309 |
| 25 ft | 135 | 205 | 47 | 387 |
| 30 ft | 162 | 245 | 56 | 463 |
Where per-foot math falls short. A formula cannot see your design. Two 10 foot garlands can need very different counts depending on how tightly you pack clusters, whether you add 24 inch statement balloons, and how much of the frame you want covered. That is why BalloonFlow AI estimates length and quantity from a photo of the garland itself, and then shows you where to add balloons. See balloon garland AI for how that works.
Measuring garland length
- Follow the path, not the frame. A garland that sweeps across the top of an 8 foot arch and down one side is often 11 or 12 feet long, not 8.
- Use string. Lay a string along the route the garland will take, then measure the string. It is faster and more accurate than a tape on a curve.
- Add the tails. Pieces that pool on the floor or trail off the end of a table count too.
- Round up. Half a foot extra costs a few balloons. Coming up short on install day costs a trip.
From a count to a quote
A balloon count is only half of pricing a garland. Our guide on how to price a balloon garland has the full formula, worked 10 ft, 20 ft and arch examples, and a free pricing calculator. The other half is what those balloons, your time, travel and setup actually cost you, and what you need to charge to make the job worth doing. In BalloonFlow AI you choose garland length and design density, get quantities with spares and estimated bags, then add material and labor costs, travel, setup, strike, delivery or rush fees and a target profit margin. The app calculates the total and the deposit, and drops them straight into a branded proposal the client can sign.
Common questions
How many balloons do I need per foot of garland?
As a starting point, plan on about 10 balloons per foot for a light, airy garland, 14 per foot for a standard organic garland, and 18 per foot for a full, dense one, mixed across 5, 11 and 18 inch sizes. Add around 10 percent spares for pops and fill-ins.
How many balloons are in a 10 foot garland?
A standard-density 10 foot organic garland works out to roughly 155 balloons including 10 percent spares: about 54 five inch, 82 eleven inch and 19 eighteen inch balloons. A lighter design needs about 112 and a very full one about 199.
What size mix does the calculator use?
It splits the count roughly 35 percent 5 inch, 53 percent 11 inch and 12 percent 18 inch, which is a common mix for organic garlands. If your style uses 24 inch or 260 accents, add those on top.
How do I measure garland length on an arch backdrop?
Measure along the path the garland will actually follow, not the width of the backdrop. Run a string or soft tape along the curve, then measure the string. For a garland that climbs one side and crosses the top, add both sections together.
How many balloons come in a bag?
5 inch and 11 inch latex usually come in bags of 100 and 18 inch in bags of 25, which is what the bag counts here assume. Some brands and colors are sold in 50 or 15 counts, so check your supplier's pack size before ordering.
How is this different from the estimate in the BalloonFlow app?
This page uses a simple per-foot formula. Inside BalloonFlow AI, the garland check estimates length and quantity from a photo of your actual design, and the pricing tools add material and labor costs, fees and a target margin so the count turns into a quote.
